There’s a myth that cast iron is hard to maintain, but with Skeppshult, that’s simply not true. Each pan is pre-seasoned with high-quality canola oil at the factory, making them ready to use right out of the box. Just rinse with hot water to remove any dust, and you’re good to go! To keep your Skeppshult cast iron pan in top condition, follow these simple steps:
Daily Cleaning:
After each use, clean your pan while it’s still warm. Use a dedicated brush and warm water without any detergent. Avoid placing your pan in the dishwasher, as it can damage the seasoning.
Drying:
Ensure the pan is completely dry after cleaning to prevent rust. The best way to dry it is to heat it briefly on the stove.
Deep Cleaning:
If the surface of your pan becomes brown or damaged, it’s time for a deep clean. Cover the bottom of the pan with coarse salt and a little water. Heat the pan on high for 1-2 minutes, until all the water evaporates. Then, rinse away the salt and wipe the pan with a paper towel. The pan will have a grey tint, indicating it’s ready to be re-seasoned.
Re-seasoning:
To re-season, apply a thin layer of canola oil to the dry pan. Heat the pan on high either on the stove or in the oven (if the pan has a metal handle; do not place a pan with a wooden handle in the oven). After about 10-15 minutes, when the oil stops smoking, your pan will be seasoned and ready to use.
Storage:
Always store your cast iron cookware in a dry environment to prevent rust. For added protection, spray a thin layer of non-stick olive oil-based spray on the dry surface—it works wonders in preserving the seasoning. If you’re storing items like casseroles or Dutch ovens with iron lids for an extended period, place a piece of paper towel inside to absorb any moisture.
